Service Levels

copyediting+

My copyediting services generally include two full copyediting passes of your manuscript and a final check of the clean copy for the following:

  • correctness and consistency in mechanical matters
    (abbreviations, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, etc.)
  • correctness and consistency in linguistic matters
(diction, grammar, style, syntax, tense, usage, etc.)
  • consistency between correlating parts of the manuscript
(contents page vs. chapters; numbering and format of chapters, page numbers, figures, and tables; footnote/endnote or in-text citations vs. bibliography/reference list, etc.)
  • consistency with your house style, as applicable
  • minor fact checking
  • potential issues with copyright/permissions

Insofar as I am able, I will also include comments that may be considered line editing or even substantive editing, e.g.:

  • inconsistencies in storyline, scenes, characters, or POV
  • awkward paragraphs, sentences, or word choice
  • character-specific linguistic style
  • format/layout
(alignment, end-of-line breaks, font sizes, order of book sections, page breaks, windows/orphans, etc.)

proofreading+

My proofreading services generally include at least one full proofreading pass for the following:

  • spelling errors & typos
  • consistency between correlating parts of the manuscript
(contents page vs. chapters; numbering and format of chapters, page numbers, figures, and tables; footnote/endnote or in-text citations vs. bibliography/reference list, etc.)
  • formatting & layout
(alignment, end-of-line breaks, font sizes, order of book sections, page breaks, windows/orphans, etc.)

This is essentially a final check after the copyediting phase and prior to publication that checks for any errors that may have slipped through.

Insofar as I note any significant or pervasive issues related to copyediting, I will point them out to you for consideration.
